In 1998, the Rehabilitation Act was amended in Section 508 to require Federal agencies to make electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities, and to give these users and members of the general public equal access to electronic information, products, and services. The Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility Standards (36 CFR 1194) and Federal Acquisition Regulation are the two regulations that implement the statutory requirements of the amended Act.
By Light supports the Rehabilitation Act in its effort to provide users of electronics and information technology with broad and unrestricted access. Our experience and capabilities in the world of systems integration and software development include: the software and hardware expertise required to identify the technological tools and means to satisfy the regulatory criteria of the Accessibility Standards; the expertise to introduce assistive technologies into integrated systems solutions (including both hardware and software); and the experience with legacy systems to ensure the successful integration of new assistive tools and processes into that environment.
For more information on Section 508, visit the Federal Government’s Official Information Site for Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act that is maintained by the GSA Center for IT Accommodation (CITA). Therein are described the key compliance elements of the statute, the regulatory requirements (Accessibility Standard and the FAR) that implement the Act, and other procurement guidance. By Light specifically adheres to the regulatory guidance and procurement requirements identified on that site as applicable to Federal and DoD procurements that include the purchase of EIT products and services as defined under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
